Do Prison Officers get fair treatment if they are injured at work ?

What happens to the public servant who chooses to accept a career in the prison service when they themselves become the victim of an assault by the very inmates who they look after? We have acted at Hubbard Pegman & Whitney LLP for many such prison officers who often find that they give more than the average employee ,to their work. They work unpopular shifts and look after some of the most dangerous people in our society. They take many personal risks by so doing and offer our society a great deal. It is not a glamorous job and it requires absolute dedication and comprehensive ongoing training.

We have seen various prison officers who have through no fault of their own but indeed through the fault of the prison service, been injured at work. For example, we have acted for a prison officer who sustained serious shoulder injuries which brought his career in the prison service to an end at a very early age. He not only lost his job and was not able to continue working but he lost his pension rights and he also lost his home. He was therefore placed on the labour market in London and unable to find any similar work. He simply could not get on the property ladder as he had no deposit and no property to sell as he had been in tied accommodation for so long through his work. He also had a family. He was forced to relocate to an area many miles from where his life was based simply to be able to afford to buy a property.

Is this how we should be paying back our public servants?

At Hubbard Pegman & Whitney LLP we fight to obtain maximum compensation for such prison officers and indeed other public servants who often find themselves in a very difficult situation. We have run claims for substantial damages for injured officers which include a claim for the relocation and associated costs.

If you are a Prison Officer and have been injured at work please give us a call. We would be only too happy to see if we could help.
