A woman who was subjected to defamatory posts on Facebook has succeeded in having them removed after taking legal advice.

The woman and her husband had started to feed and look after a cat that had been coming into her garden. The cat subsequently disappeared and the woman posted in a local Facebook group asking if anyone had seen it. An anonymous user responded to her post, claiming to be the cat’s owner and accusing her of stealing and falsely microchipping his pet.

She sought legal advice and supplied evidence including screenshots and conversations. Fortunately, it was possible to identify the Facebook user who had made the anonymous posts.

After a cease and desist letter was sent, demanding that he retract the allegations and cease and desist any further defamatory activities against her, the posts were removed.
